SOUTH BAY PONY POLICIES & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

South Bay PONY Policies

GAME POLICY

  • League registration fees do not guarantee a set number of games and issues outside the control of South Bay Pony, such as weather (rain, etc) and field availability (from the city), may impact the total number of games played

  • Each division has a set regular season schedule (and post season if applicable) and we will attempt to play all games schedulesd

  • Coaches must communicate with the leage and opposing coach any schedule changes or innability to play games

BASE DIMENSIONS

The base dimensions for South Bay Pony Baseball are:

  • 50-foot bases for Shetland (4-6 year olds)

  • 60-foot bases for Pinto (7-8 year-olds)

  • 60-foot bases for Mustang (9-10 year-olds)

  • 70-foot bases for Bronco (11-12 year-olds)

  • 80-foot bases for Pony (13-14 year-olds)

These base dimensions are the result of extensive experimentation to determine the size on which players of each age group can properly play the game of baseball. Pitching distance is also scaled to the ability of the player in proportion to the size of the diamond. The scaled down diamonds allow the players to make the plays made by the major leaguers. Outfielders can play in a position proportionately equal to that played by a major leaguer, and the double play, squeeze play, and various strategy tactics, difficult for adults and nearly impossible for youngsters on a full size diamond, become a probability rather than impossibility.

LEAGUE BOUNDARIES

The league's boundaries have been expanded to include all cities within the Southern California Division-West Region. These cities include as far North as Pacific Palisades, as far South as Los Alamitos and as far East as Norwalk. If your player resides within this region they may play South Bay Pony as well as be eligible for All Stars.

AGE RESTRICTIONS

Age cut-off dates are mandated by PONY National and are not at the discretion of SBP to determine.  It has long been the policy of SBP to prohibit age play-ups or play-downs within divisions during Spring play as it is viewed as not being the best interest of the player to be pushed outside of his or her designated age group or advanced at too rapid a rate.

ALL STAR POLICY

South Bay Pony offers All Stars for all divisions from Shetland Navy to Pony. The players will be selected by the coaches and league commissioner for each division. If selected, the player must commit to all practices and games from late June to the end of August

FUNDRAISERS

It costs approximately $100 additional per player to run our league and the only way we can keep our registration fees low is to have fundraisers. Everyone is required to participate in the fundraisers.

REFUNDS

Registration fees are non-refundable after January 15th, or when player try-out/evaluation(s) sessions occur

Frequently Asked Questions

WHEN ARE GAMES PLAYED?

The Pinto through Pony divisions will have 1-2 games per week during the regular season. It is recommended that players arrive at the field one hour prior to game time so South Bay Pony Baseball managers can warm them up and get the line-up cards ready prior to the start of the game. The Shetland division only plays 1 game per week and typically these are held  on Saturdays.

CAN MY CHILD PLAY ON A TEAM WITH ONE OF HIS FRIENDS?

The answer is YES! Please note the other players name in the registration. However, the request must be MUTUAL. Both players MUST request each other. You may also organize a full team of 10-12 players with a coach. Just note the coaches name in the registration.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR STAFFING THE SNACK BAR?

Every SBPBL parent will be responsible for working 1 or more shifts at our snack bar during the season when their child is playing on Field A. Each Team Parent Liaison will coordinate the schedule for your team.

DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN FUNDRAISERS?

Yes. It costs approximately $100 additional per player to run our league and the only way we can keep our registration fees low is to have fundraisers.

WHEN AND WHAT IS A PLAYER TRYOUT EVALUATION SESSION?

All (Pinto-Bronco) league players must attend an evaluation session to be drafted onto a team. These sessions typically last about 1.5 to 2 hours held on Field A. The evaluation gives the managers within the league an opportunity to evaluate each player prior to the draft. All players are placed on a team. Please check the Events page for league evaluations dates and times. Shetland division players do not attend evaluation sessions. They will be assigned to a team.
